Disney+ Forges Strategic Alliance with The Seven to Amplify Japanese Live-Action Content Output

Disney+ is embarking on an ambitious expansion of its live-action original programming from Japan, a strategic imperative that has gained significant momentum as the Walt Disney Company intensifies its global streaming growth initiatives. This renewed focus underscores a long-held aspiration of the company’s Asia-Pacific content division to cultivate a robust portfolio of localized Japanese productions.
In a significant development announced Tuesday, Disney+ has formalized a multi-year development agreement with The Seven, a prominent Tokyo-based production company renowned for its extensive collaborations with Netflix on Japanese-language films and series. Described by Disney as a "long-term, ongoing content development collaboration," the pact signals a deeper commitment to nurturing Japanese storytelling for the global streaming audience. While specific financial terms and the precise duration of the partnership remain undisclosed, the implications for both Disney+ and the Japanese production landscape are substantial.
"Since the launch of Disney+ in Japan, general entertainment and local originals have become an increasingly important part of our content offering, making this collaboration a natural evolution in accelerating our content investment," stated Carol Choi, Disney’s Executive Vice President of Original Content Strategy in APAC. Her remarks highlighted the strategic significance of the deal, emphasizing that it "builds on the strong relationships we’ve developed over time and represents a meaningful step forward in deepening our storytelling roots in Japan." This sentiment points to a strategic shift from project-by-project acquisitions to a more integrated, long-term developmental approach, a move that could significantly reshape Disney+’s presence in the Japanese market.
A New Era of Collaboration
Under the terms of this groundbreaking agreement, Disney’s content team will be actively involved from the nascent stages of project development. This collaborative framework will see Disney executives working hand-in-hand with The Seven’s producers to conceptualize and shape Japanese-language series exclusively for the Disney+ platform. This represents a notable departure from Disney+’s established modus operandi in Japan, where the company has historically relied on acquiring or co-producing titles on an individual basis, rather than securing dedicated development partners for an ongoing slate.
The Seven, established in late 2021 as a subsidiary of TBS Holdings (Tokyo Broadcasting System Holdings), one of Japan’s leading commercial broadcasters, has rapidly ascended to prominence in the global streaming content arena. Launched with an initial investment of ¥30 billion (approximately $205 million at the time), the company has quickly become a powerhouse producer of live-action originals with international appeal. Spearheaded by President and CEO Katsuaki Setoguchi and Vice President and Chief Content Officer Akira Morii, The Seven has cultivated a reputation for delivering high-quality content that resonates with diverse audiences worldwide.
The company’s most significant achievements to date have stemmed from a strategic, five-year partnership with Netflix, inked in 2022. This collaboration has yielded critically acclaimed and commercially successful titles, including the dystopian survival series Alice in Borderland and the manga adaptation Yu Yu Hakusho. These productions have garnered considerable international attention, underscoring The Seven’s capability to adapt compelling narratives for a global streaming audience. Beyond its Netflix ventures, The Seven also produced the upcoming jidaigeki (period drama) series, Song of the Samurai, which was recently acquired by HBO for an international release in May. Furthermore, the production house has a co-development deal with renowned Hollywood producer David Permut, known for his work on films like Hacksaw Ridge and Face/Off, focusing on film projects that bridge the U.S.-Japan market.
Strategic Positioning in a Competitive Landscape
The newly announced Disney deal positions The Seven as a rarity within the Japanese production ecosystem: a domestic production house with established, significant partnerships with two of the world’s most dominant streaming services. This dual-platform strategy is a testament to the scarcity of experienced live-action producers in Japan possessing the global ambition and creative acumen required to navigate the evolving international content market. Japan’s production landscape, once perceived as somewhat stagnant, is now undergoing a rapid transformation, with companies like The Seven at the forefront of this shift.
This strategic alliance emerges at a critical juncture, marked by an accelerating global demand for Japanese content and intense competition within Japan’s premium streaming sector. According to a recent report from Media Partners Asia (MPA), Japan’s premium streaming market experienced a robust 15 percent growth in 2023, reaching revenues of $7.2 billion. This surge positions Japan as the world’s third-largest premium streaming market in terms of revenue, trailing only the United States and China. Notably, China’s market remains largely inaccessible to foreign platform operators.
The MPA’s February estimates indicate that Netflix currently leads the Japanese premium video-on-demand (VOD) revenue market with a commanding 22 percent share. Amazon Prime Video boasts the largest subscriber base, with 19.3 million members, though its significant appeal in Japan is closely tied to its broader e-commerce offerings. Disney+, while a significant player globally, currently trails both Netflix and Amazon in Japan, accounting for just 3 percent of total viewing hours. However, the platform has recently sought to expand its presence through a strategic joint bundle with Hulu Japan, indicating a concerted effort to capture a larger market share.
The Global Surge of Japanese Storytelling
Concurrently, the international appetite for Japanese-themed content has witnessed a dramatic surge in recent years. While anime has long been an established cultural juggernaut, live-action Japanese storytelling has also begun to achieve significant global penetration. A prime example of this burgeoning trend is Disney’s own critically acclaimed samurai epic, Shōgun. The series achieved unprecedented success at the 2024 Emmy Awards, securing a record-breaking 18 nominations, including a win for Outstanding Drama Series. This critical and commercial triumph underscores the global appeal of meticulously crafted Japanese narratives.
Netflix has also recognized the immense potential of Japanese content. Last year, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters revealed that Japanese titles on the platform have collectively garnered over 25 billion viewing hours. This impressive figure makes Japanese content the second-most-watched category of non-English language programming globally, surpassed only by Korean productions. This data point provides a compelling rationale for Disney+’s intensified investment in localized Japanese content.
Future Outlook and Creator Perspectives
The collaboration between Disney+ and The Seven is poised to unlock new creative avenues and enhance the global reach of Japanese storytelling. Katsuaki Setoguchi, CEO of The Seven, expressed his optimism about the partnership: "I am confident that by unleashing the refined creativity of The Seven through Disney’s extensive network and expertise, we can evolve Japanese stories into the ‘next craze’ that people truly fall in love with." This statement reflects a shared ambition to transcend cultural boundaries and captivate a worldwide audience with uniquely Japanese narratives.
Gaku Narita, Disney’s Executive Director of Content Production in Japan, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the creative focus of their local production team. "For our local production team, the focus is on developing stories that audiences will want to come back to again and again," Narita stated. He elaborated on the benefits of the new deal, noting that it "allows us to work closely with creators in Japan from the earliest stages of development, shaping projects that reflect local creativity while meeting the high bar of storytelling that Disney+ is committed to telling." This collaborative approach, starting from the genesis of an idea, is crucial for fostering authentic storytelling that resonates deeply with both local and international viewers, aligning with Disney+’s overarching strategy to deliver high-quality, culturally relevant content across its global platform.
The strategic alignment between Disney+ and The Seven is more than just a business transaction; it represents a significant investment in the future of Japanese entertainment on the global stage. By embedding Disney’s creative and strategic expertise within The Seven’s production capabilities, the partnership aims to cultivate a pipeline of compelling live-action Japanese series that can achieve widespread international acclaim, mirroring the success of Shōgun and bolstering Disney+’s competitive standing in one of the world’s most dynamic and rapidly growing content markets. This move signals Disney’s intent to not only acquire Japanese content but to actively participate in its creation, ensuring a consistent and high-quality output that caters to the evolving tastes of its global subscriber base.
